The Monkey and the Moon

“The Monkey and the Moon” – a lovely suggestion for your next kids’ yoga class.

“Long ago, in a jungle where the trees whispered secrets to the stars, lived a playful little monkey named Hanu. He was full of energy and mischief — always climbing, leaping, and laughing. But more than anything, Hanu had a loyal heart.

One night, his best friend, a small bird, became trapped on the tallest mountain, far beyond the jungle. Hanu looked up, and far above the peak, the moon was shining bright.

“If I can reach the moon,” Hanu thought, “I can reach my friend.”

And so, with all the courage in his little monkey body, he began his journey upward.

  • Hanu planted one foot forward and stretched his other leg back. He lifted his arms to the sky, just like he was preparing to leap. “This is the pose of Hanuman,” he whispered to himself. – Anjaneyasana
  • With a big breath, Hanu bent his knees and jumped as high as he could — once, twice, again! Each time, he soared a little closer to the stars. – A few high jumps
  • Balancing on one leg, Hanu stretched his body into a curved shape like the glowing moon in the sky. He reached wide and breathed slowly to stay steady. – Ardha Chandrasana
  • As he climbed higher, a thick cloud passed in front of the moon. Hanu paused and folded forward, his arms hanging like heavy thoughts. – Uttanasana
  • Hanu knelt down and sat back on his heels. He placed his hands on his chest and closed his eyes. He remembered: his courage didn’t come from strength, it came from love. – Vajrasana
  • With one final leap, Hanu reached the mountaintop. His friend was safe. As the moon watched silently from above, the two curled up beneath its light, hearts full and still. – Balasana”

You can close the session by inviting children to reflect: What helps you be brave? Can you jump toward something you believe in, even when it feels far away?

Because sometimes, the biggest leaps come from the smallest hearts.
