“The Sun Who Wanted to Rise Higher” – a lovely yoga sequence for your next kids’ class.
“In a sky painted with soft morning light lived a young sun named Surya. Each day, he rose behind the hills to shine on the world — but one morning he wondered, “What if I could rise higher and light every heart?” To do so, he knew he had to grow stronger, steadier and kinder — not with heat, but with warmth from within. So he set off on a journey to discover what it truly means to shine.
At the edge of dawn, Surya stood tall and still, feeling connected to the earth below and the sky above. “To rise, I must first be grounded”. – Tadasana
Surya began to stretch, lifting his rays upward with grace. His arms reached for the sky, gently waking up the world. – Urdhva Hastasana
As Surya moved across the sky, he flowed through a series of graceful movements (Surya Namaskar – simplified):
Uttanasana
Anjaneyasana
Bhujangasana
Adho Mukha Svanasana
Halfway through the sky, Surya met a heavy cloud. It whispered, “You’re too small to shine for everyone”. But Surya stood firm, bending his knees and holding strong, like a flame that won’t go out. – Utkatasana
Surya remembered: true light comes from within. He opened his chest, lifted his heart, and let his inner glow shine brighter than the cloud’s shadow. – Ustrasana
With his heart full of courage, Surya stepped forward and lifted his arms high. His front leg bent with purpose, his gaze steady. “To shine”, he realised, “I must choose where to send my light”. – Virabhadrasana I
As the sun began to set, Surya curled gently beneath the horizon. He had risen higher than ever — not by force, but through breath, balance, and brightness. – Balasana”
You can close the session by asking: What does your light feel like today? Where can you shine — gently, kindly, bravely?
“Because just like Surya, we all carry a sun inside us — and every breath helps it rise.”
