Stepping into the role of a yoga teacher is exciting, humbling — and sometimes a little nerve-wracking.
Here are a few tips to support you as you begin sharing your practice with others:
1. Be yourself
You don’t need to sound like your teacher or teach like your favourite instructor. Show up as you — that’s what your students will connect with, and why they’ll come back.
2. Keep practising
Your own practice is your foundation. Stay curious, take classes with other teachers and keep exploring yoga from both your mat and your notebook.
3. Start small and teach often
Whether it’s your neighbour, your colleagues or a group of friends in the park — say yes to opportunities to teach. It’s the best way to grow your confidence.
4. Ask for support
Surround yourself with other teachers who inspire you. Ask questions, stay after class, offer to assist. A mentor doesn’t have to be official — just someone whose path you respect.
5. Plan ahead — but stay flexible
It’s helpful to come to class prepared. Even more helpful? Being ready to change the plan when needed. (And yes, if you’re wondering — Soulwise Yoga is packed with inspiration, tools and knowledge to help you create meaningful class plans…)
6. Keep learning
Go on retreat. Dive into a workshop. Study something niche, or take a deep-dive into the areas you love — from anatomy and sequencing to kids’ yoga or philosophy. Let your interest guide you.
7. Teach from what you know
You don’t have to know everything — no one does. Share what you practise, what you’ve embodied. That’s more valuable than trying to sound like a textbook.
Wherever you are on your teaching path — trust your voice and know that you’re enough, just as you are.
